EN 342
The standard EN 342:2017 specifies the performance requirements and test methods for clothing systems (i.e., two-piece suits or one-piece suits) to ensure protection against the effects of cold environments with temperatures at or below -5°C. These effects include not only low temperatures but also humidity and wind speed.
Requirements and test methods for clothing to protect against cool environments are specified in EN 14058.
Protection functions and requirements for footwear, gloves, and separate headgear are not covered by this standard.
Function:
The main function of protective clothing according to EN 342:2017 is to protect the wearer from the harmful effects of cold. This is achieved by improving the insulation against cold while ensuring comfort and freedom of movement.
Icler:
The Icler value indicates the thermal insulation between the wearer’s skin and the outer surface of the protective clothing.
AP, an acronym for "Air Permeability," describes the extent to which air can flow through a material, particularly with respect to textiles. This is a crucial factor in assessing garments for their thermal properties and the resulting comfort.
WP, standing for "Water Penetration," refers to water penetration resistance and describes a material's ability to prevent the ingress of water. It is a key indicator of the waterproofness of workwear, especially in damp and rainy working environments.
Notes:
The choice of cold protection clothing depends on the ambient temperature at the workplace, the duration of cold exposure, and the level of physical exertion. A workplace analysis must be conducted to ensure that the appropriate clothing for protection against cold is worn. When selecting cold protection clothing, ensure that hands, feet, face, and head are also adequately protected from the cold.
Labelling:
The clothing systems must be labelled according to the requirements set out in the standard.
The labelling, depicted as a pictogram on the clothing, must follow this sequence:
- Icler value
- Air permeability class
- Water penetration resistance, optional
An X in the pictogram indicates that the garment has not been tested for that specific category.
