FFP2 and Disposable Respirators.

A simple mouth-nose protection (MNS) reduces the number of droplets generated while speaking and breathing. FFP2 masks filter a high percentage of airborne particles such as dust, dirt, fine particles, bacteria, viruses, and pollen. We have options for all users. Medical face masks, FFP2 respirators, or disposable masks – CE certified and thus usable in the EU.

Respiratory Protection

A respiratory mask, like mouth protection, is part of personal protective equipment (PPE). These masks are used wherever respiratory hazards, such as chemical substances, dust, and bacteria, may occur. The medical mouth-nose protection is a standardized medical product designed to reduce the transmission of pathogens through secretory droplets. It must meet various requirements for bacterial filtration efficiency, differential pressure, and microbial load in the unused state.

Mouth Protection

Mouth protection is an integral part of hygiene clothing in medicine, food production, or clean rooms. To meet all requirements, a mouth protection must also completely cover the nose. In the mouth protection category, there are various medical masks (EN 14683) or lightweight disposable masks.

EN 14683 - Medical Face Masks

DIN EN 14683: 2019-10 is the standard for medical face masks and is specifically designed for the medical field. It does not apply to masks used for personal protection, e.g., in everyday life. Respiratory masks used for personal protection against infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi should comply with the guidelines of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment.

The mouth-nose covering is primarily intended for protection of others. Medical face masks are classified into two types:

Type I

Masks according to EN 14683 Type I have a lower filtration performance than Type II masks. Type I masks do not provide adequate protection against infections or pathogens that can be transmitted through aerosol particles or droplets. They primarily protect against larger droplets and can be used to reduce the risk of infection spread in epidemic or pandemic situations.

Type II

A mouth protection according to EN 14683 Type II is further divided into Type IIR. The additional R stands for splash resistance and denotes the mask's ability to withstand the impact of liquids. OP masks with the IIR designation are therefore liquid-resistant.

EN 149 - Respiratory Protective Devices, Filtering Half Masks for Protection Against Particles

The European standard EN 149 specifies the requirements and testing procedures for filtering half masks for protection against particles. Respiratory masks of this standard protect the wearer from particulate pollutants such as aluminum dust and smoke, fiberglass, wood dust, and aerosols. Depending on their endurance, EN 149 respiratory masks are classified into three different FFP protection levels (FFP = Filtering Face Pieces) - FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3. Additionally, the designation for the reusability of the respirator is always provided. If an "R" follows the protection level, the mask can be worn more than once. "R" stands for reusable. If instead, an "NR" is present, the mask is intended for single use only (NR = non-reusable). Furthermore, an additional "D" may be present after the reusability indication. This stands for a successful dolomite dust test of the mask. It means the mask has a particularly high dust absorption capacity and provides a long-lasting low breathing resistance. Respiratory masks with the "R" designation are always also tested successfully against dolomite dust.

Protection Level FFP1:

  • Protection against non-toxic particles based on water and oil
  • No protection against carcinogenic and radioactive substances, as well as airborne biological agents of risk groups 2+3 and enzymes
  • Typical applications: food industry

Protection Level FFP2:

  • Protection against health-hazardous particles based on water and oil
  • No protection against carcinogenic substances, radioactive particles, as well as airborne biological agents of risk group 3 and enzymes
  • Typical applications: handling of softwood, fiberglass, metal, plastics (not PVC), and oil mist

Protection Level FFP3:

  • Protection against health-hazardous and carcinogenic particles based on water and oil
  • Protection against radioactive particles and airborne biological agents of risk groups 2+3 and enzymes
  • Typical applications: handling of heavy metals, hardwood, combustion dust, radioactive substances, pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungal spores, as well as stainless steel welding

To carry the CE mark and the FFP1, FFP2, or FFP3 designation, a respirator must meet the testing requirements of the European standard (EN) 149:2001+A1:2009. This includes testing the mask's filtration performance and fit. If all testing criteria are met, the respirator can be certified according to EU Regulation (EU) 2016/425. The CE mark always includes a four-digit number indicating the testing body that certified the mask.

atemious - the Certified FFP2 Respirator

atemious is an FFP2 certified respirator. It offers the perfect balance between safe filtration of the smallest aerosols (150NM) and low breathing resistance. The atemious respirator is a premium mask developed and manufactured in Germany for effective self and external respiratory protection in professional use. atemious masks are additionally tested through the Covid Filter Certified (CFC) procedure. The atemious respirator meets the strict requirements of the FFP2 sample test guidelines in the CE standard and thus provides effective protection against solid and liquid aerosols according to EN 149:2001+A1:2009. Our standards and the "Made in Germany" label ensure uncompromising product quality. Thus, the atemious respirator not only provides reliable safety but also introduces a new level of wearing comfort. Breathing resistance, skin compatibility, and ear strain have been optimized through extensive practical tests for professional everyday use.
