As a leading supplier of cold protection workwear, we have many years of industry experience and a wide range of EN 511 certified products. Customer satisfaction is our number one priority and we pride ourselves on providing you with high quality products that meet the highest standards.
The European standard EN 511 sets specifications for protective gloves against cold. These gloves are designed to protect the wearer from both convective cold (penetrating cold) and contact cold (direct contact with cold surfaces). To certify a glove according to EN 511, it must also meet abrasion resistance and tear resistance according to EN 388 of at least level 1.
Types of Cold Protection: Convective and Contact Cold
A glove that meets the requirements of EN 511 provides protection against two types of cold: convective and contact cold. Convective cold is the penetrating cold that occurs due to wind and low temperatures. Contact cold occurs when touching cold objects or surfaces.
Performance Levels and Test Criteria
To evaluate the protective properties of gloves against cold, various test methods are applied. The performance levels for each criterion are summarized in a table:
|Test Criteria||Evaluation Options||Explanation|
|Convective Cold||0-4||Measurement of the energy needed to maintain the temperature of a heated hand model with protective glove at a constant room temperature.|
|Contact Cold||0-4||Determination of the thermal resistance of the glove material by placing it between a cold and a hot plate and measuring the change in temperature gradient.|
|Waterproofness||0-1||Waterproofness test: Passed if no water penetrates the glove within 30 minutes (optional).|
The higher the number, the better the test result.
Important Factors in Selecting Cold Protection Gloves
When choosing a suitable cold protection glove, not only the job activity but also environmental conditions such as humidity and ambient temperature should be considered. If the glove gets wet, its insulating properties can be compromised. Therefore, it is important to choose a glove that continues to insulate well in moist conditions. Additionally, the protective glove should remain flexible in extreme temperatures to prevent hand fatigue.
The Importance of Cold Protection Gloves in the Workplace
Working in cold environments can increase the risk of frostbite and other cold-related injuries. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate protective gloves to keep hands warm and protected. Gloves according to EN 511 provide an optimal combination of thermal insulation, comfort, and protection, allowing workers in cold environments to work safely.
