Metal detectable plastics have optical and metal detection properties, standard components with metal powders, including thermoplastics to produce metals at an affordable price and be detectable. The additives make the material sensitive enough to magnetism so that it is conductive and can detect unwanted particles with conventional metal detectors and X-ray equipment.

Detectable articles are mostly blue, which is achieved by grey additives. The blue colour enables sighting because the colour rarely occurs in nature.
