How long do pathogens remain in the air?
An average adult breathes approximately 12 to 18 times per minute. With exhaled air, they release aerosols that may contain viruses or bacteria – such as influenza or coronavirus. Depending on room conditions and the type of germs, pathogens can remain in the air for up to 6 hours.
When multiple people are in enclosed indoor spaces, there is an increased risk of infection. To reduce this risk, the WINTERSTEIGER Group, in collaboration with an Austrian-German research team, developed an innovative air purifier: the Cubusan. Over more than 6 months of intensive development work, the air purification device Cubusan was created.

Why are we so confident in this? The Wintersteiger AG commissioned scientists to research air disinfection. The result is a process that quickly ensures clean and safe air even when multiple people are present in the room. The efficacy and safety of this product were confirmed by the Competence Center for Technical Hygiene & Applied Microbiology in Malsfeld, Germany, and subsequently validated by the Institute of Microbiology at the University of Innsbruck. How does air disinfection work?
It takes inspiration from nature and creates small summer storms almost continuously. The disinfection performance is based on the action of Hydroxyl Radicals (OH) in an electro-physical process. These ions occur naturally in the atmosphere and are produced by the UV radiation of the sun or lightning discharges. The impact can be felt in nature after a thunderstorm when the first rays of the sun break through the clouds. The air is noticeably fresher and cleaner at that moment.
Hydroxyl radicals are therefore also called the "detergent of the atmosphere." The plasma generator in the Cubusan creates a mixture of air and cold atmospheric plasma. It contains various oxygen species, including highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. These spread throughout the entire room through the built-in fan and particle movement (diffusion) and react electro-physically with the germs present in the aerosols. Viruses, bacteria, and fungal spores are killed, and the room is disinfected up to 99.9%.
Which product is right for me?
Many companies advertise their products as eliminating viruses and bacteria by 99.9%. However, when purchasing an air purification device, you should inquire about 2 important features:
- Permanent Real-Time Protection: How are germs in the air neutralized when the air purification device is, for example, 5 meters away from a person? How long does it take for the germs to reach the device to be neutralized?
- Duration of Disinfection in Relation to Room Size (in mÂł): What duration does the manufacturer specify to achieve 99.9%? You will be surprised how long some devices take to disinfect a very small volume!
Why is the Cubusan more effective than other air purification devices?
Conventional air purification systems, typically filter systems, have a significant drawback. The room air is heavily circulated, circulated, and only gradually cleaned through the filter in these systems. This results in bacteria and dangerous viruses being distributed in the room and thus promoted to other individuals – making social distancing less effective. Moreover, filtering the entire room air is very time and energy-intensive. Devices placed in the room are very loud at the necessary air throughput for germ reduction and usually require regular cleaning/replacement of filters.
